Why? Weekends!

For every weekend that hands us gorgeous weather, there’s one that hands us, well, less gorgeous weather. That’s OK, though! We didn’t let the rain and coolness dampen our fun!

Friday night, we chilled at home with what is a not-often-enough Friday ritual of homemade pizza, a bottle of wine, and catching up on the DVR.

photo

I’m completely addicted to Scandal and, as a DVR watcher, need to stay spoiler-free until I can catch up with the show, which is not usually easy! I somehow managed to avoid the spoilers and was completely shocked at the end of the episode.

On Saturday, I got in my morning vinyasa flow at Harmony Yoga. I’m also part of Team #yogaallthelivelongday, which you can read more about here, so I’m committing to practice at least a small bit of yoga every day (more to come on this, I’m sure).

After that, I headed to check out the new Earth Fare in Solon. Stay tuned later this week for a post on that and a giveaway to go along with it!

IMG_6041

To round out the day, Matthew and I went to his college friend Jenn’s house for the first BBQ of the summer. I think it’s great that Matthew, Jenn, and Jody have maintained their friendships for so long! On the way to Jenn’s, we drove through Matthew’s alma mater, Kent State University, for a little more college nostalgia.

IMG_6048

Plus, weekend BBQ’s with friends are one of my favorite things about summertime. Even though the weather wasn’t too summery, I still sipped a beer or two and got ready for lots of grilling and cornhole ahead this season.

Sunday, we celebrated Mother’s Day by taking my Mom to brunch at XO Prime Steaks.

IMG_6051

The brunch menu was a nice mix of breakfast and lunch items. Mom and Dad went the breakfast direction with apple and pear crepes and lobster eggs benedict, respectively. Matthew and I chose lunch, with blackened salmon and wild mushroom ravioli. Matthew and I also shared a very dense, but tasty, white chocolate, raspberry and macadamia bread pudding for dessert.

mycollage (1)

Everything was delicious and it was a nice, relaxing afternoon for Mom!

IMG_6059

I grabbed another yoga class on Sunday evening. I generally have a tougher time practicing in the evenings, but find my energy level is definitely better on weekend evenings than during the week.

How was your weekend? Did you celebrate Mother’s Day?

On Friday evening, Matthew and I were treated to an exclusive peek at the tantalizing goodness happening at Provenance at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Chef Partner Douglas Katz and Executive Chef Matthew Jankowski have created a menu that is truly an intersection of art and food.

IMG_5967

We started our evening as all evenings should: with delicious cocktails! I recommend the thyme and ginger, a refreshing vodka beverage.

IMG_5963

Pictured above with the thyme and ginger is a mushroom and leek cake, which was one of my favorites nibbles of the night. We also got to taste melt-in-your-mouth scallops and shaved duck on top roasted fingerling potato.

IMG_5960

There was also an impressive array of cheeses and cured meats.

IMG_5957

From the nibbles we had, I cannot wait to try a full meal at Provenance! The restaurant is open the same hours as the Museum: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday, 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. Aside from the 76-person dining area, there are also two private rooms for parties.

bon_appetit_1-14-2013__dining_room_w_art

This is truly a beautiful and tasty addition to the Cleveland Museum of Art! The group of us there for the tasting are truly thankful to Provenance for making us feel so welcome!

IMG_5968

After the tasting, we got to check out the MixUp event, which is a monthly fusion of art, music, cocktails happening the first Friday of every month. You can peruse the galleries, as well as have a cocktail and listen to music in the impressive new atrium area.

IMG_5970

Check out next month’s MixUp on Friday, June 7 or Solstice, one of the hottest parties of the summer, happening Saturday, June 22.

Having had the opportunity to spend time at the Cleveland Museum of Art twice recently, I will tell you that the Museum is a must-see, must-eat, must-spend-time destination. And to help you do just that, I have a $100 gift card to Provenance to give away!

Here’s how to enter: You can do one, two, or all three entries, just leave a SEPARATE comment for each entry:

1. Leave a comment telling me one of your favorite artistic restaurants (in food presentation or decor).

2. Follow @ClevelandArt and @WhyCLE on Twitter and leave one comment letting me know you’re following both.

3. Tweet the following phrase and leave a comment letting me know you tweeted:

I want to dine where art and food combine at @ClevelandArt from @WhyCLE: http://wp.me/p1fb9r-1ty #giveaway

Why? Fresh Fork!

Every week this summer, I’m sharing what we received and what we made from our Fresh Fork Market summer share. Hopefully this will inspire you, whether you’re a Fresh Fork customer or not, to incorporate some locally-grown, healthy elements into your cooking!

What We Got:

1 bunch cylindra beets

1 quart whole milk yogurt

1 spaghetti squash

1 acorn squash

1 cantaloupe

1 bag mixed peppers

1 lb red fortune plums

1 pint concord grapes

2 lb roma tomatoes

1 head lettuce

1 bunch collards

6 ears sweet corn

What We Made:

Baked Spaghetti Squash with Garlic and Butter (click here for the recipe)

I had heard people rave about spaghetti squash, so I had to give it a try. While I think I’d leave out the salt in the recipe next time, other than that I really enjoyed this buttery garlic-y side dish! The parsley added a nice freshness too.

Roasted Tomato and Green Pepper Pasta Sauce (click here for the recipe)

Holy vegetables! I used Fresh Fork tomatoes, peppers, and carrots in this sauce. The veggies smelled so good while they were roasting and made a nice, hearty sauce. I also added a couple of the other peppers in our mixed pepper bag for some more variety.

Marinated Collard Green Salad (click here for the recipe)

Matthew saw collard greens again this week and was quick to say, “No more boiled greens.” Since we both love having a salad we can take for lunch at work, this recipe seemed a perfect compromise. It makes the collard greens soft enough to eat without being the traditional boiled greens preparation. I was amazed at how the salt and marinade really did change the texture of the raw greens.

Spicy Grilled Corn on the Cob (click here for the recipe)

We had our parents over for a cookout on Sunday, so grilled corn on the cob was a perfect choice. The butter has cumin, paprika, chili powder, and cayenne pepper and has a delicious smoky flavor that compliments the grilled corn.

Garlic Red Potatoes (click here for the recipe)

A simple, quick-to-prepare side. I really enjoyed the lemon and garlic flavor in this dish. If you use the entire bag of red potatoes from Fresh Fork, you will need to bake longer than called for in the recipe.

Plum Tart (click here for the recipe)

Such a tasty way to use the plums! The filling is literally just fruit, with just a bit of brown sugar in the crust/crumble top. I was surprised at how well the “crumble-style” crust held together, too. This was a hit at our Sunday cookout!

Concord Grape Sorbet (click here for the recipe)

While Matthew may be the master of ice creams, I whipped up this easy, light, and flavorful sorbet on Monday. Our kitchen smelled a bit like Smucker’s jam afterwards, but it was worth it.

How did you use your Fresh Fork this week?

Why? Weekends!

After Matthew and I slept off the effects of Midnight Brunch, it was time to get down to the rest of the last weekend of the summer. I swear, it was just the Fourth of July…this summer flew!

On Saturday afternoon, we went over to our friends Brian and Laura’s new house for a Housewarming BBQ. Our summer has been packed with friends’ backyard parties and they have been one of my favorite parts of the season. This BBQ was no exception: lots of good food, good conversation, and getting to check out their new digs. There were also cake pops, which were a particular favorite with some guests…

From Brian and Laura’s, I headed over to Willoughby Brewing Co. for a birthday celebration for my college sorority sister, Katie.

I always enjoy the beer at Willoughby Brewing. My standing favorite is the Peanut Butter Coffee Cup Porter, but I also really liked the Oktoberfest that I tried. Willoughby Brewing offers a more variety on their menu than the typical brewpub. However, I was not impressed by my entree on Saturday.

I chose the sun-dried tomato pasta and found the seasoning lackluster and the pasta/sauce ratio skewed (way too much sauce for the amount of pasta). I’ve had some dishes I really enjoyed at Willoughby Brewing, but I don’t think I’ll be ordering this one again.

From Willoughby Brewing, we continued our tour of downtown Willoughby with stops at Mullarkey’s Pub and Nickelby’s Roundbar and Kitchen. At Nickelby’s, I had my first glass of Southern Tier Pumking for this season. I love this “pumpkin pie in a glass” beer and may have convinced the entire table to each order one. It’s officially fall in beer land!

It was a fun night celebrating Katie’s birthday and reminded me how much I enjoy downtown Willoughby – it’s an eclectic mix of restaurants, bars, and people that’s laid back and not pretentious. Cheers to the birthday girl!

On Sunday, we had our parents over for some holiday weekend grilling and feasting. It was a perfect end to an amazing, fun, busy, whirlwind summer in Cleveland!

How did you celebrate your holiday weekend? Are you ready for fall?

Why? Puppypalooza!

Hi guys! This is Tobey, CLEpup reporting to you about Cleveland Indians Puppypalooza. That’s when pups like me get to go to the ballpark! I was so excited: I went to Puppypalooza last year too and had so much fun! I couldn’t wait to do it again.

First, they had a fair where I got to meet Wally Waterdrop and the nice people from Q104.

I also met Jake the Diamond Dog. I want to be like Jake someday.

Then I got to walk around the field. I helped my new friend Tucker and my old friend Furio stay in line. I’m a very good dog like that.

After I got off the field, I got to meet my hero – Mustard. Mustard gets to be on the field all the time and he never cheats like that Ketchup guy. Mom says she likes Onion best because she has a purse like Mom’s. But for me, Mustard is the best!

Mom and Dad were excited because it was Dollar Dog Night. I think I should get more than a dollar. I try to help clean up when Mom spills stuff while cooking and I always go out when I’m told. I only ran away one time and I had a really good reason. But anyway, Dollar Dog I guess means the people eat really cheap. I got to have a “dog” too. I don’t like to call them that, though.

Then I was on the big TV. I was dancing to my favorite song. My Mom and I dance to it all the time. It’s about calling me about cookies…or something…

Anyway, Mom and Dad are the best for taking me to Puppypalooza.

***Disclosure from the blogkeeper: I was offered 1 human ticket and 1 dog ticket from the Cleveland Indians to attend Puppypalooza in the Social Suite. As always, all opinions are 100% my own. Or Tobey’s. As previously mentioned, I’m a crazy dog lady.***

Why? Fresh Fork!

***A bit of blogkeeping: Random.org has picked a winner! Congratulations to Dianna (comment #12), who is the winner of 2 tickets to Taste of the Browns! Please check your email and respond by the end of the day today or a new winner will be drawn. If you didn’t win, you can still purchase tickets by clicking here or you can enter Clue Into Cleveland‘s or Bite Buff‘s giveaways.***

Another week, another bumper crop of fresh goodies from Fresh Fork Market.

What We Got:

1 bag oats, 1.5 lbs

1 bunch red Russian kale

2 ct squash

1 lb beans

1 bunch French breakfast radishes

1 pint blackberries

1 candy onion

2 green peppers

1 pint cherry tomatoes

1 package (1.25 lbs) green onion bratwurst, made from Berkshire pork

What We Made:

Pasta with Roasted Cherry Tomatoes and Squash (click here for the recipe)

There are so many things to love about this recipe. It was easy: chop cherry tomatoes, squash (I substituted squash for the sweet peppers called for), onion and roast; toss with pasta, fresh basil, and parmesan. It was quick: done in a very short amount of time, which is great for a weekday supper. It was fresh: the flavors of the vegetables made this dish so tasty.

Savory Breakfast Steel Cut Oats (click here for the recipe and here for how to cook rolled oats on the stove)

I am not a breakfast person. As much as I love to cook, I very rarely make breakfast. So, Matthew got a big surprise Saturday morning when I got up bright and early to make him something to eat. I substituted kale for the spinach called for in the recipe. The egg, oats, and kale were all from Fresh Fork. The verdict: savory oats are a bit different, but a nice hearty way to start your day.

Roast French Breakfast Radishes with Green Garlic and Pink Peppercorns (click here for the recipe)

I love roasting radishes! It takes the bitterness away. These paired up as a side for the savory oats (they are breakfast radishes, after all).

Ohio Creamed Corn with Bacon (from Michael Symon’s Live to Cook)

A great way to use up last week’s sweet corn. This is a bit time-intensive because of making the corn cob stock, but it’s worth it. We served this alongside the bratwurst, which we simply grilled. This combination made a perfect summer meal!

Blackberry Smoothie (click here for the recipe)

This is a great way to drink your breakfast! The honey balanced the tart of the berries nicely. I loved the color of it too – purple is my favorite.

How did you use your Fresh Fork this week?

Why? Weekends!

***Have you entered to win 2 tickets to the Taste of the Browns? You have until 11:59pm tonight, Monday, August 27. Click here for more details and to enter. Remember you can tweet once a day for more entries.***

The weather gave us another taste of summer and I definitely made the most of it this weekend! Friday night started out with dinner in one of my favorite Ohio City spots: Johnny Mango World Cafe. Matthew and I snagged a patio table and enjoyed some $4 happy hour margaritas.

For dinner, I had the fried rice with shrimp. I love the fresh cool tomatoes and cucumbers on top the fried rice and the spicy lime sauce adds a perfect kick.

Matthew chose the Jamaican jerk chicken. This hearty platter comes with chicken with mango salsa, rice, beans, and vegetables.

From there, we headed to Date Night at the Zoovies. This first-time fundraiser for the Cleveland Zoological Society combined the fun of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo with food, drink, and the 1980′s classic movie The Breakfast Club.

When we arrived at the Zoo, we were able to wander around the African Elephant Crossing and Australian exhibits. Because the sun was going down and the temperatures getting cooler, the animals were more active than they are during the day.

From elephants to various types of birds to the majestic lion, we had a great time checking out the animals.

We met up with Alicia and Hans and Sarah and Kevin before heading over to the amphitheater to watch the movie. We also loaded up on movie-themed snacks, from popcorn to hot pretzel sticks to a fun candy table with gummy bears, M&M’s, and Laffy Taffy.

Of course, The Breakfast Club is a classic and we all enjoyed seeing it again for the first time in the cool outdoor setting of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The Girls – our dates are behind the camera

Here’s hoping the Cleveland Zoological Society makes Date Night at the Zoovies a regular fundraiser, maybe even more than once a year!

On Saturday, I put on my standard country concert attire – jean skirt, boots, hat – and met up with my friend Beth for the 2012 Dollar Bank WGAR Country Jam.

The line-up for this year’s Country Jam was full of names you know (Craig Morgan, Trace Adkins) and names you’re just getting to know (The Farm, The Lost Trailers). We had Super Fan tickets, which meant a great view of the stage and a fun swag bag to boot.

During the time between acts, we wandered the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, bought raffle tickets for a motorcycle (What if I win? Eek!), watched some mechanical bull antics, and found a gigantic Adirondack chair to relax in.

We also met up with Julie and her boyfriend, who won my ticket giveaway for the Country Jam.

As the sun went down and the music stayed up, I took in a perfect summer day: outside in the beautiful weather, great music, cold beer, and one of my oldest and best friends!

How was your weekend, CLE? Did you enjoy the summery weather?

***Disclosure: I was asked by the Cleveland Zoological Society to help promote Date Night at the Zoovies. In exchange, I received 2 complimentary tickets to the event.
