Why? Weekends!

It was a very theatrical weekend for me, as I got to take part in some of the great artistic culture CLE has to offer. On Saturday, CLEguy and I attended the Near West Theatre benefit. The event was held in Trinity Commons, but I had no idea we’d spend the evening in a beautiful old cathedral which was transformed for the evening.

Actors from Near West Theatre, in Old English costume and accent, wandered through the crowd, entertaining us even before the official performance started. We were immediately drawn to the large buffet, with food prepared by Spice of Life Catering.

There was a “royal menu” and a “peasant menu” and we had ample amounts from both. The royal menu included lobster pappardelle, beef, and apple and chicken sausage. The peasant menu offered cabbage and noodles, root vegetable stew with wild rice, and roasted chicken. Everything was tasty and delicious! There were also fabulous mini desserts provided by Gypsy Beans and Baking.

We were treated to a brief performance from the Near West Theatre group, who impressed me with their talent and passion, particularly the children involved in the production.

Afterwards, the floor was open for dancing, checking out the silent auction, and mingling with friends. We got to see fellow bloggers (and their significant others) Clue Into Cleveland, Bite Buff, and Finding the Time. Special thanks to Sara from Finding the Time, since I won tickets for the event from her blog contest.

Near West Theatre is in the midst of a capital campaign to build a new passive energy theater at West 67th and Detroit in the Gordon Square Arts District. The benefit was a fabulous production and hopefully went a long way to making this new theater a reality.

After the benefit, Spice Kitchen and Bar hosted an after-party. Having been to Spice Kitchen for the #HollaDays party, I was anxious to return and sample some of their menu. I tried the mushroom beignets, which I can only describe as fried puffs of mushroom deliciousness.

I also couldn’t pass up the chai pot de creme and CLEguy selected the chocolate sampler.

The chai pot de creme was cinnamon-y and creamy and the perfect winter treat, particularly when you dipped the shortbread cookies in it. CLEguy loved the chocolate sampler, with everything from chocolate-covered hazelnuts to spicy chocolate bark to chocolate molten cookies. From the looks of it, I think the chocolate pieces came from Lilly Chocolates, but I forgot to ask our server.

All in all, a fantastic evening celebrating local theater, as well as some of the best and tastiest that Gordon Square has to offer!

But I wasn’t done being theatrical for the weekend! For Christmas, CLEguy and I told his dad to pick a show at Playhouse Sqaure. His dad chose the performance of a piece called “Oyster” by the Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak Dance Company.

The performance was sponsored by DANCECleveland, one of only eight stand-alone dance-only presenters in the country. DANCECleveland seeks to bring unique dance companies to Cleveland. The Pinto and Pollak company is based in Israel and DANCECleveland spent over two years working out the details to bring the company here.

The show was incredibly interesting and unique – a bit like Cirque de Soleil, but with less acrobatics and more dance. And I’m always taken away to another place by the beauty of the Playhouse Square theaters. The cast also a did a question-and-answer session with the audience, which helped shed light on the theme and message of the show.

CLEguy’s dad loved the show, which is what you hope someone will feel about their Christmas gift! After the performance, we had dinner at Bricco. Tasty pasta and retail-priced wine night combined to make a great dinner. Bricco is a convenient option after shows at Playhouse Square. Personally, I can’t wait until Zack Bruell’s Cowell and Hubbard opens and provides another tasty post-show option.

So, that was my weekend, experiencing some of more unique theater that Cleveland has to offer. I’m reminded again how fortunate we are to have such a strong cultural arts community in CLE. What’s your favorite place to see a show in CLE?

Why? Indian Delight!

On Tuesday night, I gathered with some of my favorite gals for spicy food and non-stop conversation at Indian Delight.

Around the table that night:

Alicia from Poise in Parma

Amanda from Clue Into Cleveland

Julie from Wearing Mascara

Kimberly from SMITTEN…in Cleveland

Crystal from Eat*Drink*Cleveland

Sarah from Cooker Girl

I hadn’t had Indian food in ages and was so excited to try a place that comes highly recommended.  I chose the lamb vitaloo.

Chunks of lamb and potatoes are served in a spicy curry sauce. The entree also came with basmati rice. And I couldn’t pass up an order of garlic naan to soak up all the curry goodness.

I ordered my entree “medium spicy.” It was definitely hot, but not set-your-mouth-on-fire hot.

Indian Delight has a lunch buffet, which I am dying to check out, since there was a lot of the menu I wanted to try. They also do take-out, for dinner on-the-go. The food was delicious and authentic. The service was a bit slow and some of our entrees got mixed up, but we were having so much fun chatting, we didn’t notice all that much.

No alcohol was involved in the making of this photo (or hat)...seriously

I can’t say enough about how much fun I have with these lovely ladies. I used to call them my “blogger friends,” but now they’re simply my friends (who also happen to blog). It’s so great when you can connect with people who share interests, passions, life views, and more. Spending time with these ladies warmed me up even more than the curry!

What’s one of your favorite girls’ night out spots? We need to plan our next outing!

Why? Wine and Cupcakes!

Last week, CLEmom and I attended another fabulous wine and cupcakes pairing put on by Miss WineOH. I always enjoy these events: they are laid-back, fun, and of course, tasty! This event was held at the Olde Wine Cellar in scenic Olmsted Falls.

This cozy wine shop has a fantastic variety of interesting wines. My favorite name that I saw while browsing? Naked on Roller Skates!

Anyway, back to the tasting…

Our first two mini cupcakes of the evening came from Indulgence Cakes and the rest from A Cookie and a Cupcake. First up was a 2010 Chateau Belair Moustet White Bordeaux paired with an olive oil and peach cupcake topped with herbed marscapone icing.

The wine – as Tammy told us – would pair well with food without dominating the flavors in the dish. While the wine was pleasant, there was nothing particularly striking about it. The cupcake was interesting and tasty – I expected it to be mainly savory, but found the peach and marscapone sweetness to be the more dominant flavors.

Next was a 2009 Bonny Doon Albarino Ca’ de Solo Estate paired with a white chocolate wasabi cupcake with plum sake filling.

If I thought the first cupcake was interesting, nothing could prepare me for the sweet heat of cupcake #2. The wine brought out the zing of the wasabi and made for a delectable pairing. This was my favorite of the night!

Our third pairing was a 2009 Root 1 Pinot Noir matched with a dark chocolate and bacon cupcake.

CLEmom samples the cupcake

Red wine, chocolate, and bacon? Nothing wrong with that!

Next up was a 2008 Hey Mambo Sultry Red paired with five-flavor pound cake with lemon icing.

The five flavors in the pound cake are vanilla, lemon, butter, rum and coconut. The lemon taste was very prevalent and I was surprised how well this paired with a red wine. This was definitely CLEmom’s favorite cupcake of the night.

We then switched back to savory flavors with a 2010 Amberhill Secret Blend paired with a roasted garlic cupcake with gouda icing.

It is so goud-a!

I’m not sure what I expected from this one, but it was straight-up a garlic cupcake. The natural sweet and spice of the garlic paired perfectly with the wine and really worked in cupcake form.

Last was the course I thought would be my favorite…a 2007 InZINerator paired with a cherry chocolate cupcake with salted caramel filling.

I love zinfandel, I love chocolate, I love salted caramel. But I did not love this pairing. What happened? Well, the wine is a blend that includes port, making it thicker and clingier than I’m used to from a zinfandel. Also, the cherry in the cupcake icing was very powerful. I think the combination of strong cherry and port in the wine was just too much for some. In fairness, some people loved the combination, but it wasn’t for me.

It was the perfect illustration of what Tammy always says at her events – not every wine or every pairing works for everyone. And, at the end of the day, you should drink what you like. It was a great event and such a fun mother/daughter evening! For more information on upcoming tastings, check out Miss WineOH’s site.

Why? CSU Pack the House!

One of my blog-o-lutions for this year was to share more budget-friendly activities in CLE. That’s why I was so excited to hear about Cleveland State University’s Pack the House. CSU, along with other NCAA schools, is taking the Pack the House challenge to raise awareness of their stellar Division I women’s basketball teams.

On Saturday, January 28 at 2pm, the CSU Vikings women’s basketball team will take on Detroit. You can watch all the Division I action for only $1! That’s right, tickets to the game are only $1. The goal is to set an attendance record, as part of the Pack the House challenge. In addition to the basketball action, there will be a free Kids Zone, $1 menu items, and post-game free throws.

As if you needed more reason to check out Pack the House, a portion of all ticket sales will benefit The Gathering Place. This organization helps support people with cancer and their families through free programs and services.

You can purchase tickets online or at the Wolstein Center box office. When you purchase your tickets in either place, use code WhyCle in the promo code box (or tell the box office worker) to let CSU know you learned about Pack the House here.

CSU Pack the House is a fun, budget-friendly way to spend a Saturday afternoon, supporting not only CLE’s urban university, but women’s sports and The Gathering Place!

***Disclosure: I was asked by the Wolstein Center to participate in a contest among local bloggers to see who can “Pack the House” the most. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.***

It was a busy, fun, exciting weekend in CLE! To rest up for busy days on Saturday and Sunday, CLEguy and I stayed in on Friday night. I made stuffed peppers in the slow cooker and we sipped (OK, completely finished) our growler from Whole Foods of Bell’s Expedition Stout. This is a big, rich stout perfect for winter nights and able to stand up to hearty cooking.

Saturday afternoon, I was off to get my om on at the Yoga Room. Becca from Peace, Love & Bagels is completing her yoga teacher training and was giving a free class. Her fiance, Brandon of FireSide Symphony, provided musical accompaniment for the class.

Our focus for the class was approaching practice as beginners – not being afraid to fall or make mistakes. In that spirit, Becca was able to assist all of us with getting into headstands – most of us for the first time! Also standing on their heads with me were bloggers from MojaMala2, Finishing Firsts, and Wearing Mascara. It was a great class and I hope to be able to practice with all these ladies again!

Saturday evening, CLEguy and I met up with friends for dinner at Chinato, which completed our personal Tour de Bruell. We were able to take advantage of the special for Zack Bruell’s restaurant week. Until January 28, all 4 of Bruell’s restaurants are offering $30/3-course menus.

I chose the mushroom bisque to start, which was deliciously rich, but not too creamy. CLEguy selected the scallops with pomegranate, which were perfectly cooked.

For our entrees, I chose the veal piccata and CLEguy chose the pork tenderloin.

The veal was lightly breaded and tender. It was served over polenta that was perfectly creamy. The pork was accompanied by apples and potato dumplings, which complimented the dish well.

The food was perfect, as was the portion size. Considering it was a 3-course meal, everything came sized allowing you to leave full, but not overly stuffed.

We both chose the chocolate hazelnut mousse cake for dessert, but we weren’t the only ones, as the restaurant sold out before we could get ours. The chef generously allowed to select any dessert from the regular menu as a replacement. I had the tiramisu and CLEguy chose the cannoli with candied citrus.

Decadent and delicious! We have never been disappointed by a dining experience at one of Zack Bruell’s restaurants and Chinato was no exception!

Sunday, after another yoga class to burn off the tiramisu, CLEguy and I headed to Toth’s Place for our friend Brian’s first public sale of his incredible burgers. Brian has a company called Burgalicious, which makes preseasoned hamburgers you can cook at home.

These burgers are truly delicious – they have a sweetness to them that I can’t quite pinpoint (or get Brian to explain to me). We had to attend the first public sale to get our Burgalicious fix. If you’re looking for some incredible burgers to throw on the grill at your next BBQ, definitely check ‘em out!

Sunday night, the place to be in CLE was The Greenhouse Tavern, as Chef Jonathon Sawyer’s episode of Iron Chef America aired. There was quite a festive atmosphere, as waiters sported “#TeamSawyer” t-shirts, a huge TV screen was set up for the viewing, and all the “#TeamSawyer” tweets were projected on the tavern wall.

Some of the tweeps in attendance that night: @ADHicken, @ScottHicken, @EatDrinkClev, @TLColson, @FrankZupan, @Tweetmeslow, @BrewersDaughter, @Journeymancook, @lzone, @MoninaW, @cacoughlin, @smittenincle, @BQRC23, @Rock1chef, @dougtrattner, @EmergingChefs, and many more!

The secret ingredient for Chef Sawyer’s battle against Iron Chef Zakarian was mint. As soon as the secret ingredient was announced, we were given special menus listing the same delicious creations Chef Sawyer made on Iron Chef America! Not only could we order the entrees, we were given free tastes of the appetizers and dessert from the show.

It’s not every day you can say you ate like an Iron Chef judge. On the right is the mint fritter with zucchini, feta, and preserved lemon. Bright citrus flavors and creamy cheese in a ball of fried perfection…yes, please! On the left is the chevre salad (a GHT favorite of mine) with lamb confit, crispy mint, lamb sausage, chevre, and “sexy Chardonnay vinaigrette.” CLEguy and I agreed this was our favorite!

We also got to try the “Stoner Sandwich” dessert, with shamrock semifreddo, fresh waffles, and pistachio. This dessert simply must be on the menu in time for St. Patrick’s Day! Completely delicious! After all this, CLEguy and I had to buy a “Kitchen Drink:” a round of beers for the hard-working kitchen staff. Next time you’re at GHT, I encourage you to do the same. They’ll let you ring a big bell to notify the staff of the beers!

SPOILER AHEAD…if you DVR-ed Chef Sawyer’s Iron Chef episode, stop reading here and come back after you watch!

Chef Sawyer, Sous Chef Brian Goodman, and the whole Greenhouse Tavern team did an amazing job representing CLE. From making his own cheese to discussing the importance of local, sustainable food to presenting unique, delicious dishes, Chef Sawyer rocked Kitchen Stadium. Unfortunately, the judges seemed to think Chef Zakarian rocked a little harder.

GHT Chefs and Staff gathered to watch Iron Chef

What really struck me about both the episode and the watch party is Chef Sawyer’s commitment to Cleveland. From hearing “Keepin’ it classy, Cleveland” during the episode to the gracious way we were greeted and treated last night, this is clearly a chef who loves and is proud of his town. And CLE loves and is proud of him!

So that was my weekend, CLE! What new answers to Why CLE? did you discover this weekend?

On Wednesday night, the Ohio Blogging Association met for our monthly meet-up at Whole Foods in University Heights. This is where we had our first meet-up ever last January and I was glad to see the same smiling face that greeted me last year as our hostess:

Alicia from Poise in Parma and Lisa from Whole Foods did a fantastic job making us feel welcome. It’s always exciting to see how the OBA grows at each meet-up and this was no exception.

There were a lot of new faces in the mix. In attendance were bloggers from:

The staff at Whole Foods allowed our creativity to run wild with a pizza throwdown challenge. We each could select the toppings, sauce, and cheese for our own individual-sized pizza. Our pizzas were made in Whole Foods 600-degree brick pizza oven, which fires up tasty pies every day (and Tuesdays are BOGO pizza day!).

Being the nice bloggers we are, we ended up making a “pizza buffet” to share the creations.

My pizza had garlic and olive oil, mozarella cheese, mushrooms, tomatoes, artichoke, and eggplant. Yum! There were some interesting creations, such as Hans’ (Mr. PIP) pizza with bacon, sausage, pineapple, and blueberries. By far my favorite of the night was from Kristian of Ohio Festivals who had ham, apple, and honey on his pizza. Sweet and delicious!

Whole Foods also generously gave us growlers to take home with a $1-off coupon.

Kimberly from SMITTEN…in Cleveland, Julie from Wearing Mascara, Hans (Mr. PIP), and I were unable to resist filling ours before we headed home. Kimberly chose the Thirsty Dogs 12 Dogs of Christmas Ale (always a tasty choice) and I selected the Bell’s Expedition Stout. I had a sample at Whole Foods and I think it’ll be a perfect wintry-night beer!

I always have such a great time at the OBA meet-ups! From seeing people I’ve known for over a year now to meeting new bloggers, I never fail to leave smiling ear to ear and knowing I’ve both made and strengthened friendships.

We have an awesome blogging community in CLE and I encourage you to check out the next Ohio Blogging Association meet-up, happening February 21 at Wine & Design in Tremont. See the OBA Facebook page for more details. Have a great weekend, CLE!

Why? Weekends!

I was a homebody this weekend, CLE. Between not making plans and the snow, I had a little “at home” R&R and I have to say, it was pretty great!

Friday morning, I decided to try a new (for me) class at Fitworks: Dance/Step/Weights. Through this class I learned that I have no problem making a complete fool of myself in a windowed room where everyone else at the gym can see you. Other things I learned: I am clearly the most uncoordinated human being on the planet and CLEguy and I better register for dance lessons before the wedding.

Friday evening, I had some friends over for a girls’ night in. CLEguy had gone up to Detroit for the Auto Show, so a giggly, gossipy, wine-infused evening was clearly in the cards.

We ate take-out Chinese food,

watched “Gilmore Girls” (I got the complete series for Christmas),

and pretty much talked non-stop. Girls’ nights in are good for the soul!

The next morning, I got up bright and early with every intention of helping my friend Beth and her husband move into their new house. However, I was greeted with this:

Completely unable to even get out of my driveway, I had to bail on helping move boxes and settle in to being stranded. Nature was forcing me to relax. So, in honor of the many games of “Family Feud” I played on the iPad that day, here’s the top things I did while snowed in:

1. Watched more “Gilmore Girls.”

2. Finally started reading the third book in “The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo” series.

3. Made dough for homemade pizza crust and homemade bread.

4. Finished the wine from Friday night.

5. Bundled up and attempted to shovel the driveway/missed the days of living in a condo where they would shovel for me/ended up paying the neighbor kids $20 and some brownies to do it for me.

6. Drove the pups crazy (and vice versa).

All in all, being stranded wasn’t so bad. It’s rare for me to “time-out” like that on a weekend, but maybe I need to do more of it.

Sunday, CLEguy and I had the final walk-through of our house and it went perfectly. As I mentioned, we’ve been house-hunting and everything seems to be falling into place so well.

For Sunday dinner, I made classic beef stew in the slow cooker. Not only did it make the house smell yummy for the walk-through, it’s also a perfect wintertime meal. I also used the rest of the dough I made Saturday to make homemade bread for sopping up the stew. Delicious!

Since we wanted to celebrate the walk-through going well, we popped a bottle of bubbly, which does not pair all that well with stew. Oh well, it was still a nice celebration! We should be in our new house by the beginning of March! Now, who wants to help pack boxes?!

Hope you had a great weekend, CLE! If you actually got out and about in the world, tell me what you did!

Why? Five Things This Friday!

It’s time for another “Five Things This Friday,” otherwise known as not-quite-long-enough-to-be-their-own-post. Also, last night I thought of 5 and can currently only remember 3, so this may be interesting…

1. I had dinner last night at the always-fabulous Match Works Tavern. If you’re looking for respite from the sea of chain restaurants nearby, it’s well worth checking this place out. For the month of January, Match Works has a 3 for $30 deal. You get an appetizer, soup, or salad to start, an entree, and a dessert for $30.

Last night, I had the pumpkin soup

the veal ravioli (which were more like veal pierogi in size and shape…and when have I ever not loved a pierogi?)

and the apple cobbler.

2. My adorable niece-to-be has started walking. I am very proud and consider her the smartest child alive.

3. Tuesday, January 17, Miss WineOH is hosting another wine and cupcakes tasting. The event starts at 7pm at the Olde Wine Cellar in Olmsted Falls. Six wines will be paired with six mini cupcakes for a delicious experience! Tickets are $30 and can be purchased here.

4. Pier W was recently ranked among the Top 20 Restaurant Views in America by the Daily Meal. Check out the article here. Any season of the year, Pier W offers gorgeous views of CLE and outstanding food, so check it out again (or for the first time)!

5. I’m still completely blank on #5. Happy Friday the 13th, dear readers!
