If you’re last minute about making plans for the big evening, don’t worry! There are plenty of cool things going on that you can still be a part of! Here’s a sampling:

Downtown/Ohio City

The Cleveland Indians are hosting Snow Year’s Eve! Your $99 ticket gets you a prime rib dinner buffet, 2 drink tickets, DJ and dancing, champagne toast, fireworks, and a breakfast buffet starting at midnight. Or you can skip dinner and just purchase party tickets for $49 per person.

The Greenhouse Tavern is hosting an End of the Mayan World dinner complete with nine (yes, nine!) courses and a DJ spinning tunes. Cost is $89 for the dinner, plus an additional $45 for drinks paired with all nine courses. Not a bad place for your last meal!

Touch Supper Club is hosting a New Year’s Eve bash, with a six course dinner for $65 (drink pairings are $20 extra). There will be a party, with DJ, following dinner.

The downtown club scene will be hopping on New Year’s Eve, with events at Velvet Dog ($35 at the door, $125 VIP), Drop Bar ($99 includes open bar), Cadillac Ranch ($25 general admission, $75 includes open bar), and Blind Pig ($25 includes open bar until 9pm).

Great Lakes Brewing Company is hosting Brew Year’s Eve. $60 admission gets you 3 drink tickets, heavy appetizers, dancing, a jazz trio, a magician, and a beer toast at midnight.

East

Willoughby Brewing Company will be featuring Abby Normal and the Detroit Lean as part of their New Year’s Eve live entertainment. Stop in for a beer and some great music!

Sarava on Shaker Square is offering a three-course dinner for $55 and/or a New Year’s Eve party with salsa and samba music for $15.

Match Works Tavern is offering a five course dinner for $45, including champagne and a take-home box of chocolates.

West

Around the Corner is hosting a cover-charge-free New Year’s Eve, with live music, a champagne toast, and hermit crab races (you read that right).

Dave & Buster’s is offering a New Year’s Eve Mystery Dinner theater. Tickets are $70 and include the show, dinner, games, and a champagne toast.

Chez Francois is offering three dinner seatings for New Year’s Eve. Dinner is $65 for the earlier seatings and and $85 for the latest seating, which includes music and dancing.

Wherever you end up this New Year’s Eve, please remember to be safe! Click here for a general list of Cleveland cab companies, just in case!

What are your plans for New Year’s Eve?

Why? Weekends!

As we nurse our food and drink and present-induced holiday hangovers, I thought I’d do a recap of my CLE holiday weekend. This post doesn’t involve going to a fabulous restaurant or spending an evening on the town. It’s all about time and traditions shared with some of my favorite people.

On Friday, CLEguy and I spent the day at home, baking cookies and wrapping presents.

We made thumbprints, meringue with crushed peppermint and mini chocolate chips, shortbread, and anise cookies.

As a break in the holiday busy-ness, we stopped over to visit some CLEfriends and their adorable little ones.

Friday night, we snuggled up by our Christmas tree to watch “White Christmas” and enjoy some special Christmas beers we picked up at Lizardville: Hopping Frog Frosted Frog and Lager Heads Winter Mischief.

Saturday, we headed to my parents’ house for Christmas Eve dinner. My family continues the Eastern European tradition of having a meatless Christmas Eve dinner. We call it “Poor Man’s Meal” and it consists of simple breaded yellow Lake Perch, mashed potatoes, and creamed peas.

It’s a delicious meal that I find myself craving around the holidays. Plus, I love keeping a tradition alive! After dinner, some games, and dessert, we went to midnight Mass, another of my favorite holiday traditions.

The next morning, we got up bright and early to open gifts with my family. My first Christmas surprise was one of my favorite ones ever… You all know the song “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas,” right? Well, I tend to sing it a lot around the holidays, so CLEguy actually got me a hippo of sorts.

Yup. that’s CLEpup, dressed in a puppy hippopotamus costume, complete with a pink tutu. It was the funniest Christmas gifts I’ve ever received!

Beyond that, I must have been a very good yogini, because I got quite the yoga gear haul from lululemon.

From a new mat to yoga pants and tops to a yoga block and strap from some of CLEguy’s family, I can’t wait for my next class!

After opening gifts with my family, we headed to CLEguy’s family for Christmas Round 2. The excitement and chaos of the kids opening presents and throwing paper everywhere is exactly what Christmas is supposed to look like!

We got back home pretty beat from all the holly jolly festivities and I got to try out another favorite present: feetie pajamas!

Yup, they are as warm and comfy as they look! CLEguy knows me too well!

It was an absolutely wonderful, busy, traditional, perfect Christmas. And no matter what gifts were under the tree, I know I’m blessed with the best gift in the world: lots of love!

Hope you all had a fantastic holiday weekend! How did you celebrate?

Why? Stone Mad and Deagan’s!

***A bit of blogkeeping: First, we have a new winner of the $25 Key Possibilities MasterCard gift card: Lindsay! Please contact me at whycleblog@gmail.com by Friday.

Second, check out my guest post about fun things for kids to do in CLE today on Healthy Heddleston!***

The last two evenings have been packed with holiday cheer and I just had to tell you about both of them!

Monday night, CLEguy, CLEparents, and I went to Stone Mad Irish Pub for their Christmas party. As I’ve mentioned here before, I absolutely adore Stone Mad: the atmosphere is cozy and relaxed, everyone who works there is so hospitable, the beer list is great, and the food is delicious. You can’t go wrong! And for the holiday party, Pete and Eileen (the owners) really go all out!

We started our evening with seasonal beers: Great Lakes Christmas Ale for CLEguy and Bell’s Winter Ale for me. Then we enjoyed a delicious meal. CLEguy had the Stone Mad burger with tons of toppings and I chose the herb-roasted chicken with maple glaze and marscapone polenta on the side.

I nabbed a bite of the burger and it was delicious: juicy and flavorful! The chicken was great, but the polenta was really the star of the dish for me. It was perfectly cooked and delightfully creamy. I wish my homemade polenta could turn out that well!

After dinner, we headed back to the front room to listen to The Ohio City Singers entertain a packed house. We also grabbed some chestnuts, literally roasted on an open fire in Stone Mad’s outdoor fireplace. By the way, if you’ve never had them, chestnuts are quite yummy (once you peel them).

Stone Mad was also offering horse-drawn carriage rides through Gordon Square. This was my absolute favorite part of the night. So many of the houses had Christmas lights blazing to celebrate the season. It was a peaceful, romantic way to end the evening.

The Stone Mad Christmas party is already on our calendar for next year!

Last night, one of my best friends Beth and I met up for our Christmas dinner at Deagan’s Kitchen and Bar.

Our server, Ashley (who was in every way charming and wonderful), told us that Deagan went Christmas crazy a few months ago, planning the decorations for the restaurant and printing a special version of the menu that has the Deagan’s logo ringed with Christmas lights. The restaurant is very festive, with a large Christmas tree, lots of lights, and a paper garland chain that criss-crosses the ceiling 4 times.

All the decorations set the tone for a fun and Christmas-y evening. Beth and I split a bottle of the Trapiche Malbec, which is one of the best Malbecs I’ve had in awhile. We also shared an order of the Devils on Horseback: dates wrapped in bacon, served with a chile sauce. This dish is sweet, spicy, and smoky.

Since it was Deagan’s famous Taco Tuesday, Beth decided to go with the tacos, including the Heirloom pork taco of the week.

The tacos must have been pretty tasty because I wasn’t able to snag even a bite! I chose two of Deagan’s small plates: the vegan strudel and the lump crab rangoons.

The strudel was stuffed with Killbuck Valley mushrooms and shallots. It was absolutely delicious! The pastry was light and flaky and the veggies were packed with flavor. As a non-vegan, I’d order this dish again and again. The rangoons were also fantastic: nice and crispy and packed with real, delicious, sweet lump crab.

Since Beth and I are basically unable to pass up dessert, we each made our selections. Beth had the cranberry quince bread pudding and I chose the vanilla porter brownie sundae.

Again, I’ll have to take Beth’s word (and clean plate) as evidence of the yummy-ness of her choice. The brownie sundae was so tasty. Ashley told us that the ice cream – made with Breckenridge Vanilla Porter (one of my faves) – is made by Mitchell’s Ice Cream exclusively for Deagan’s.

It was a fun, delicious, festive evening that helped us get even more in the spirit of the season!

Where are some of your favorite pre-holiday locations to get together with friends?

Why? Weekends!

It was another busy weekend in CLE, with holiday parties galore! Friday night, I got another chance to wear my Walmart snowman sweater vest at my friend’s Ugly Christmas Sweater party.

Don’t we all look festive?! There were plenty of holiday munchies, as well as some spiked eggnog to warm us up!

Saturday was a busy day of holiday grocery shopping, writing out Christmas cards, and more! Since CLEguy and I have been running around a ton, like most people this time of year, I decided we needed a date night. Sure, we’ve been doing a lot of things together, but a chance to go out one-on-one has been hard to come by lately.

We headed to one of our favorite spots: Momocho. I can’t say enough about the food, the atmosphere, and the service at this “Mod Mex” spot.

We started with the guacamole sampler with the goat cheese, crab and corn, and jicama/habanero/mint guacamoles. The crab and corn is my favorite: such a tasty combination of spicy and sweet!

You can’t forget the margaritas! I had the spicy mango and CLEguy went for the cucumber with a chile lime salt rim.

For our entrees, CLEguy had the duck taquitos (my favorite!) and I had the beef brisket taquitos. The pomegranate barbacoa with the duck taquitos is to die for! And the ancho and coffee braised beef brisket was tender and so flavorful.

Over a shared dessert of Mexican chocolate pudding – with the most delicious pretzel brittle on top – we agreed that date nights, especially at this busy time of year, are a necessary part of the schedule.

Sunday morning, I woke up with a list of things that needed to be done that day, which is always how it is this time of year. I decided to take an hour to go to yoga class, though, and I am so glad I did.

Our teacher played all Christmas music for the class. It was a cheery, centering experience and definitely put me in the right frame of mind to tackle the holiday week to come!

Sunday afternoon, I went to Katie of Healthy Heddleston‘s baby shower. Katie is such a cute mom-to-be and she was absolutely glowing during her shower.

Katie and John are having a boy in March and you can follow along with the pregnancy journey on her blog! I also got a chance to catch up with Julie of Wearing Mascara and Kali of Finishing Firsts.

Sunday evening, CLEguy and I had some friends over for dinner and games by the Christmas tree. Not everyone was as excited as we were…

I made my signature lasagna. I’m not Italian, yet somehow my grandma, mom, and I have over the years created a great lasagna recipe. Everyone’s recipe is a little different, as we make modifications over time, but it’s always fun to cook with an old family recipe.

So, that was my weekend, CLE. A little partying, a little holiday erranding, and a little time for me, too. How was your weekend? How do you find time for yourself during this busy season?

Why? Alumni Groups!

One of the best ways to get involved, network, and meet some new faces is to join your local alumni association. CLE has a ton of active alumni organizations for every school from high school through graduate school.

Since it’s the season of get-togethers, CLEguy and I have found ourselves with a slew of alumni events lately. CLEguy went to Kent State University, which has a county-by-county organization. We recently met up with some Kent State alums for wine, cheese, and a fun Kent State raffle. The alumni association also used the get-together as an opportunity to raise money for the annual scholarship it gives out.

Last Friday, I met up with some John Carroll University – my undergrad alma mater – alums for Christmas Ale and Christmas cookies at Panini’s.

Aside from the cookies, beer, and free t-shirts, it also was a chance to catch up with old friends, connect with alums I never met before, and volunteer to help with my 10-year class reunion (coming up all too soon).

John Carroll’s alumni events range from happy hours to special Masses to a homecoming clambake to breakfast with Santa to reunion. There’s something for everyone!

Last night, I met up with the Cleveland chapter of the American University alumni association. American is my law school alma mater.

Since the school is located in DC, I didn’t have much expectation of keeping up with alumni events here. However, there was a great turnout at the Treehouse happy hour and the school hopes to have more regional events to provide a connection to alums located in CLE.

Beyond just schools, other organizations offer alumni groups. For example, most fraternities and sororities have alumni associations in cities across the country.

The Cleveland chapter of the Kappa Delta Sorority alumnae association has monthly events (plus a separate monthly happy hour for younger alums). The group puts on fun ladies’ nights out, as well as philanthropy events like making dinner at Ronald McDonald House.

I encourage you to see if your college, graduate school, or other organization has an active alumni group in CLE. If you’re new to CLE, these groups can provide instant connections and social outlets. When I lived in other cities, these groups were invaluable in helping me meet new people and feel a part of the town.

If you’re a CLE native, alumni groups help to keep you connected with your past. They not only strengthen and renew relationships with old friends; they also provide you with new connections too.

Are you involved with any alumni groups in the area?

Why? Blogiversary!

So, I don’t normally publish on Tuesdays, but this is a very special Tuesday (and not just because it’s CLEgrandpa’s 87th birthday and PIP‘s Mom’s birthday too).

It’s Why CLE’s one-year blogiversary!

When I started blogging, I wanted to be anonymous. I thought the experiences of a faceless CLE-er would be enough to share. But the more I blogged, the more I realized that sharing myself with you, dear readers, enriched the blogging experience (for both of us, I think).

So, I’m switching from CLEgal to Jen.

Hi, I'm Jen :-)

Hopefully it feels friendlier to you…it’s a little change, but one I wanted to make as I start to share even more of “me in CLE” with you.

One year ago, I never imagined a lot of things that have happened in the last year through this blogging medium, such as:

How much fun I would have planning posts, writing about my city, and sharing CLE love

The new friends I would gain

The readers/tweeters/random CLE-ers I’d get to meet

The amazing events I’d get to atend

The way my deep love for my city would grow and change and strengthen

That’s what the blog has given to me. So, now I’d like to give something to you. I’ve shopped up a basket of some of my favorite homegrown CLE things and one lucky Why CLE? reader will take home the whole thing.

The basket includes:

An aluminum Cleveland Metroparks water bottle

A giant Malley’s milk chocolate candy bar

A six-pack of Great Lakes Brewing Co. Christmas Ale

A bottle of Bertman’s Ballpark mustard

A bar of “Cleveland Gray” soap from Terra Verde Soap & Candle Co.

An oakmoss and amber scented candle in an Indigo Imp Brewery bottle from Terra Verde Soap & Candle Co.

A pair of Ohio-shaped earrings (with a star where CLE is) from Banyan Tree

So, how do you enter?

1. Leave a comment letting me know something/someplace in CLE you’d like to see Why CLE? write about in the coming year.

2. “Like” Why CLE’s brand spankin’ new Facebook page and leave a comment letting me know you did.

3. Tweet the following phrase and leave a comment letting me know you did (you can tweet once a day for additional entries, just make sure to comment each day)I’m #HappyinCLE and I want to win a basket of CLE goodies from @WhyCLE: http://wp.me/p1fb9r-tU

The giveaway will close at 11:59pm on Sunday, December 18 and the winner will be announced here on Monday, December 19.

Thanks for a wonderful year! I can’t wait to see what the next one brings!

Why? Weekends!

Hi CLE! We’re in the midst of the holiday season and everyone’s weekends are busy, busy, busy!

Friday night, CLEguy and I went to my alma mater, John Carroll University’s, holiday alumni happy hour. The event was called “Christmas Ale and Cookies,” so how could we resist?!

Held at Panini’s in both Westlake and Mayfield Heights, this event brought together alums of all ages. It was great to catch up with some college friends I don’t get to see as often as I would like, nibble on some Christmas cookies, and enjoy CLE’s favorite holiday beverage!

On Saturday, CLEguy and I headed down to Columbus for a wedding. On our way south on 71, we stopped at Grandpa’s Cheesebarn.

I had often seen the signs advertising Grandpa’s Cheesebarn, but this was my first visit. Grandpa’s Cheesebarn is actually a complex of buildings, including the cheesebarn, a candy store, and various craft shops.

The upstairs of Grandpa’s Cheesebarn includes hundreds of cheeses. One of CLEguy’s favorite things was that each cheese was out to be sampled, making your shopping easier (and tastier).

We ended up with a cranberry cheese that’s only available at the holidays, a toffee cheddar, smoked gouda, and Australian sharp cheddar. “Grandpa” was even working that day and rang up our purchases! After sampling lots of cheeses, we popped downstairs to the cafe for something sweet: a turtle sundae for CLEguy and a chocolate chip cookie sundae for me.

Grandpa’s Cheesebarn is definitely worth a stop on your next 71 drive!

Once we arrived in Columbus, it was on to the wedding of my Claire (my former co-worker) and Kelly.

The reception was held at the Ohio State University Faculty Club. The venue is a beautiful old stone building, set on Mirror Lake on OSU’s campus. Mirror Lake is currently decorated with blue and white holiday lights as part of the campus “Light Up the Lake” celebration, so we had a pretty (but chilly) walk to the party.

We enjoyed a delicious buffet dinner, including unique choices such as pan-fried gnocchi and seared duck breast with wild rice that was to-die-for. Then we danced off our dinner with songs from Motown to Lady Gaga. And the venue was decorated for Christmas, keeping the holiday spirit alive too.

All in all, a fantastic evening celebrating a wonderful couple! Best wishes, Claire and Kelly!

How was your weekend CLE? How are you getting in the holiday spirit?
