Why? Searching for Healthy Balance!

There’s a lot of good eating in CLE, dear readers. As you’ve seen chronicled here and on other CLE blogs, we have some world-class chefs, cool restaurants, and fun events centered around food. We also have weather that, to put it mildly, doesn’t always inspire me to go outside. Searching for a healthy balance between dining out as often as I do and staying fit and healthy is something I find myself working on fairly often. I thought I’d share my story, in case you find yourself searching for the same sort of balance.

For most of my life, I was overweight. I wasn’t an overly athletic or coordinated person. In high school, I was on the Speech and Debate team, not the Volleyball team. I didn’t find a balance between being involved in more sedentary extracurriculars and my love of Oreos. The balance just kept tipping further toward unhealthiness. I was completely unhappy with how I looked, but the problem seemed insurmountable. I tried to make up for it – I worked hard to be the funniest or the smartest – but all the while the balance just kept tipping.

Me (on the left) just before my 21st Birthday

In grad school, I finally decided I had enough. I wanted to find balance. I joined Weight Watchers, stuck to the program, started working out religiously, and the weight started coming off. It was like my body wanted to balance itself. I hit my goal weight nine months after starting the program. And then, I kept going. It felt so good to finally buy the clothes I wanted, to get attention I hadn’t gotten before, to feel – dare I say – skinny. And so I tipped the balance back to unhealthy, just at the opposite end of the weight spectrum. Weight Watchers told me I’d have to stop coming to weigh-ins, as my weight had gotten lower than they were comfortable acknowledging and encouraging. Friends kept trying to feed me cookies. I didn’t understand why – I thought I looked the best I had ever looked, despite still not feeling all that great.

At my lowest weight in May 2005

I look at pictures now and realize I looked a little like a bobblehead doll. Belated thanks to those who mentioned I may have taken things a little too far…I didn’t want to listen at the time, but you were right. Less is not always more.

So, eventually I returned to my search for balance. I put on a bit of weight and realized that it’s not about the number on the scale being small, it’s about the number on the scale being right. I’m at a point now where I can eat at L’Albatros and still feel good about myself. It’s a challenge to stay at that point and it’s not at all easy.

Me on my 30th birthday

One of my biggest difficulties in the search for balance is finding a fun and engaging way to stay in shape. As I said, I’m not super athletic or overly coordinated. By nature, I default to being more sedentary. So, how do I keep myself in a healthy balance? I’ve tried a lot of new things and found inspiration and ideas from folks like Hungry in Cleveland, Poise in Parma, MojaMala2, Healthy Heddleston, and Finishing Firsts.

I did the Couch to 5K program this past winter and, while I ultimately decided running isn’t the right fit for me, I completed the program and ran 2 (and a half) 5K’s. I went to my first yoga class ever and fell in love. This is definitely a part of my healthy (physical and mental) balance. I want to try spinning and Zumba and whatever else comes along. I’m open to ideas and new things – all in the name of maintaining the balance.

My point is that it’s tough for all of us to stay in balance. I know there are times where I tip out of balance. But having been at both ends of an unhealthy spectrum, I’m committed to staying at a good middle ground. I’m not giving up my cupcakes or my skinny jeans. I hope you all have that balance in your life too. And if you’re ever looking for someone to help find it with, let me know. I’ll be right next to you in that Zumba class.

***I never, ever thought I’d write this post. And I never, ever thought I’d share “old” pictures of myself. Much love and appreciation for making me feel like I could.***

Why? Weekends!

This weekend was all about crossing things off my “30 for 30″ list. In fact, I managed to cross off 3 items in one night!

On Saturday, I went for a birthday dinner with CLEguy and CLEparents to L’Albatros Brasserie and Bar (#5 on my “30 for 30″).  I have literally never had anything less than a fantastic experience at a Zack Bruell restaurant, so I couldn’t wait to try L’Albatros.

With our beverage order, I also managed to begin on #15 on my list:  drink more champagne.

Having received a lot of recommendations, we knew ordering the French toast appetizer was a must. We also selected the escargots, the goat cheese tart with olives and sundried tomatoes, and an appetizer special of duck and foie gras sausage.

The French toast was amazing and my favorite of the bunch. The sweetness of the French toast mingled with the earthiness of the mushrooms to create an absolutely amazing flavor. The fresh greens and cheese on top just added more depth to the dish.

The escargots and goat cheese tart were well received around the table. Not being a fan of olives, I’ll have to take everyone else’s word on the tart (this may be the only time I’ve ever passed up goat cheese).

The duck and foie gras sausage was delicious and the flavors of both really came through. The lentils didn’t really add much to the dish, however.

For our entrees, we all selected something different, so we could share around the table.

I chose the veal short rib, served over risotto. The veal was fall-apart tender, with a wonderfully rich flavor. The risotto complimented the meat perfectly and the flavors of both shone. CLEguy selected the skate wing. The skate was light, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. It was paired with a layered vegetable tart that was a wonderful accompaniment to the dish. CLEmom and CLEdad each chose variations of scallops: a special with butternut squash risotto and the menu entree with broccoli fettucine. Both were delicious, but my preference was the fall-inspired flavors of the scallops special.

For dessert, CLEguy and I couldn’t pass up L’Albatros’ legendary cheese board.

Our server was an expert and took us through each of the varieties and made great recommendations. From a goat’s milk cheese from Spain to Cremont (a creamy cheese from Vermont) to an awesome pecorino romano, we savored every bite. Paired with delicious bread and with a blueberry compote to cleanse our palates, we were delighted with our dessert.

L’Albatros may just have to be a recurring event on the “30 for 30″ list. From fantastic food to wonderful service to cheese to die for, it was a perfect meal!

And just when I thought that was plenty for an evening, CLEguy and CLEparents surprised me with a birthday gathering of friends at Stone Mad Irish Pub.

It was such a lovely and unexpected surprise! We spent the evening sipping on Southern Tier Pumking and catching up with friends. I also got to cross the third item off my “30 for 30″ list: #26 Finally try LaBella Cupcakes. Yup, my party included a ton of delicious cupcakes from LaBella, including dark chocolate raspberry, Guinness, apple pie, and pumpkin spice. Delicious!

I also got some additional help with #15 (drink more champagne), as my friend Beth gifted me with a bottle of bubbly!

It was a wonderful evening of crossing things off my list. At this rate, I’ll be done with my “30 for 30″ in no time! And hopefully all my crossings off the list will be this much fun! Hope you had a great weekend, CLE!

We had chicken meatballs, pulled pork mini sammys, hummus in cherry tomatoes, carmelized onion tarts, tapenade, puff pasty with brie and raspberry and more. There were vegan options, gluten-free options, and just a whole lot of yummy food. My favorites were the pulled pork – juicy, smoky, sweet, deliciousness – and the brie and raspberry tarts, or as I call them, little puffs of heaven.

After the eating and getting to know each other/catching up, we got a tour of The Chubby Cook facilities.

The Chubby Cook is committed to making good, healthy, delicious food. It’s really that simple. From organic and locally-grown products to great pricing and a staff that is truly passionate about their work, The Chubby Cook is a wonderful new local business to support.

It was another great Ohio Blogging Association meet-up with new and old friends, delicious food, and a new place to try for lunch, dinner, or group catering. Stay tuned to the Ohio Blogging Association page for information on the October meet-up!

Why? NEO Food Tours: Gordon Square!

***Have you entered to win 2 tickets to Hunger Network’s Rolling on the River event? You have until 11:59pm on Thursday, September 22 to enter. Check it out!***

Last night, CLEguy and I had the pleasure of attending one of the NEO Food Tours signature tours. This tour was of the Gordon Square area, which is one of my favorite neighborhoods in CLE. Gordon Square is an awesome example of residents, businesses, and community leaders coming together to revitalize an area, while still preserving its history and culture.

Our tour started at the Cleveland Public Theater.

NEO Food Tours isn’t just about the food, it’s also about learning about the neighborhood where you’re eating. The Cleveland Public Theater  provides a haven for local artists to express themselves through avant garde theater, expressive dance, music, and more. Of the seven world premiere shows that CPT is running this season, five of the shows are from local artists. Beyond that, CPT provides community-based arts programs targeted toward at-risk youth.

CPT is also undergoing a major renovation to make it’s theaters more accessible. The Gordon Square theater is the oldest theater still being used as a theater in CLE. It was built in 1912 as a vaudeville house!

After our tour, we were treated to a pop-up restaurant from Battery Park Wine Bar. Battery Park’s Y.O.L.O. (“you only live once”) theme was born of the owner deciding, after 20 years in the wine-selling business, to take a leap of faith and open his own wine bar. Battery Park Wine Bar will be celebrating it’s one-year anniversary in November. The food was delicious and won CLEguy’s “favorite of the night” award. It was certainly the most generous portion we received all night, too.

We were treated to two flatbreads. The first had pumpkin seed pesto, pumpkin goat cheese spread, seared chicken, apples, and spicy tomato simple syrup. Sweet without being too sweet, this flatbread brought the flavors of fall together perfectly. The second flatbread had roasted spaghetti squash, bucheron cheese, baby spinach, raisins, and candied pecans, finished with a maple sriracha syrup. The sriracha added a nice heat to counteract the sweetness of the maple and pecans. I could have used a bit more texture on this flatbread, but both were quite delicious. Our flatbreads were paired with The Wait Reserve Malbec, a delightful Argentinian wine.

Next, we strolled down West 65th Street, learning more about the Capitol Theater and the neighborhoods Romanian churches.

The Capitol Theater originally opened to show silent movies and has a rich history as one of CLE’s movie theaters. The inside of the Capitol Theater has been completely refurbished and everything is historically accurate – except for the digital screens. The Capitol shows art-house and independent films, in keeping with the spirit of the Gordon Square neighborhood.

There are two historic Romanian churches in the Gordon Square neighborhood. One was the first Romanian Orthodox church in the U.S. and is now owned by Cleveland Public Theater. The other is a Romanian Byzantine church that is still operating as a church on West 65th Street.

We arrived at our second stop: Stone Mad Irish Pub.

The patio at Stone Mad is entirely made of, well, stone. From stone benches to an impressive stone fireplace and beautiful fountain, this is a pretty amazing spot to relax and enjoy a pint of Guinness, which we did. The inside of the pub is just as impressive, with gorgeous handblown glass light fixtures, amazing mosaic tiles in the restrooms, and Ohio’s only indoor bocce court.

At Stone Mad, we sipped Guinness and enjoyed a mini beef brisket sandwich with horseradish sauce.

The beef brisket was amazing: tender, juicy, and flavorful. The brisket, along with all the other food at Stone Mad, is made fresh and never frozen. The other impressive thing about this sandwich was the bun: lightly toasted and really tasty, it held up to the moist quality of the brisket, while still being somewhat soft.

From Stone Mad, we headed back up to Detroit Road for a walk through the Gordon Square arcade.

The arcade is home to the Gordon Square Arts District and the Detroit Shoreway, two community-based organizations working to make the area bigger and better all the time. One thing that piqued my interest: November 17 is the kick-off to Gordon Square’s holiday shopping season!

We crossed the street (with dubious traffic controllers) to Luxe Kitchen and Lounge.

We heard about Luxe’s desire to be in the Gordon Square  neighborhood and it’s commitment to the arts, as well as a “reuse, recycle” focus. Other fun facts about Luxe: their wine list is a treasure trove of delicious, yet still affordable wines, found by focusing on less expensive but still high quality wine regions. Also, Luxe welcomes your pups on their patio for Sunday brunch and will even cook them up some chicken and rice! CLEpups can’t wait to go!

Now, onto the food…

Luxe’s dish featured duck and goat cheese and handily won my “favorite of the night.” Seared duck breast was served over lentils, which had duck confit mixed in. The dish was topped with goat cheese, almonds, and a blackberry compote. The flavors of the duck and lentils paired perfectly and the almonds added a nice crunchy texture. Our tasting was paired with a de-classified Brunello wine that was smooth and absolutely incredible.

Our final stop of the night: XYZ the Tavern. XYZ was the newest kid on the block of the restaurants we visited, having opened in February. The vibe is relaxed, the beer and whiskey lists are outstanding, and the food is described as “pub grub, with a twist.” Well, this was like no pub grub I’ve ever had…

Applewood-smoked pork tenderloin was topped with apples and carmelized onions and served with a butternut squash and chevre napoleon with pecan brown butter. When you figure out what’s wrong with any of that, let me know…I’m pretty sure there’s nothing. The dish was amazing. You could truly taste the applewood flavor on the pork and the butternut squash napoleon was crisp and fresh. These seasonal ingredients all came together perfectly. We were given a choice of wine or beer and CLEguy and I both chose the Southern Tier Harvest Ale, a hoppy autumn brew.

The evening capped off with a “Rye Not” cocktail (rye whiskey, bitters, maraschino liquor) and a gift bag.

In our gift bag: coffee and a muffin from Gypsy Beans and Baking, chocolates from Sweet Moses, a pass to see a show at Cleveland Public Theater, and more. What a great end to a fantastic night of food and fun.

I can’t recommend a tour enough: the food is spaced out enough that you’re not stuffed at the end, you get to learn a ton of great facts about the neighborhood you’re in and meet chefs and owners of the restaurants, and you get to mingle with other great CLE folks who love this town as much as you do. The next signature tour is October 19 and will take on Public Square and all it’s history. It’s sure to be a great time!

***Disclosure: I was invited to attend the NEO Food Tours Gordon Square Tour with a media pass for myself and a guest. Much thanks to Todd, Melissa, Elizabeth, and Amanda for a great tour and being gracious hosts. As always, all opinions in this post are 100% my own.***

Why? CLE Birthday!

Today is it…it’s my birthday. As an only child and general lover of all things party-related, my birthday has always been my favorite “holiday.” But this year…this year is the big 3-0.

I want 30 cupcakes. Image source - heavenlydelightcakes.com

Last Friday (3 days before the big 3-0), I had my gallbladder removed and was feeling all kinds of sorry for myself. Not only did the surgery make me feel old, but it decidedly hampered my ability to celebrate my birthday.

Somewhere in the midst of this weekend, though, I decided to stop the grousing and be positive. First, the surgery went very well and the recovery time is actually pretty short. Second, I’ll be the big 3-0 for a whole year, not just a day. So, here are my 30 things I will do to make the big 3-0 an amazing year. Note that “having an organ removed” was going to be on the list, but the scheduling got a bit messed up…

Why? It’s Called Believeland for a Reason!

***Much thanks to my fabulous friend and blogging Fairy Godmother, Alicia from Poise in Parma, for this rockin’ guest post. Make sure you stop by Alicia’s blog to catch up on all things CLE-related, as well as healthy living tips, pictures of her adorable fuzz Grady, and much more. Alicia will be running the US Air Force half-marathon this weekend and I’m so grateful she made time in her crazy life of training, work, and blogging to share some thoughts.***

Greetings from Parma! CLEgal graciously offered me a moment on the WhyCLE? blog today with an open forum for my thoughts. Lord knows I share enough of them over at Poise in Parma, but there’s something on my mind in regards to the mission of this blog.

My good friend CLEgal has boomeranged a few times from Cleveland and back. She’s not the only one I’ve watch do this. When you are a “lifer” of Cleveland, you get used to people leaving – and a lot of the time, returning.

Yes, there are those that leave for good. They go hand in hand with the folks that still look at Northeast Ohio as a depressed region.  Poor CLE is stuck with residents allowing self-doubt fill their minds and thoughts:

  • All those jobs will never come back.
  • That (enter name of construction project) will never get finished.
  • We’re never going to win a championship.
  • The snow is going to be here by Halloween and last til Memorial Day.

I won’t lie and say that I love all the weather that Lake Erie brings. But it’s how you view your surroundings that provide for your opportunities in them.

To know my background:  I grew up in the Parma area, went to college on the West side, worked downtown for several years before now enjoying the “9 to 5” on the East side of town. I married my high school sweetheart and we live in the neighborhood we grew up in.

Perhaps some of my life decisions were made for the sake of familiarity and safety. I chose Baldwin-Wallace over schools in Columbus or Western Ohio because I wasn’t ready to move away from home.  I chose the management side of the arts because I didn’t believe in the strengths of my talents as a performer.  I didn’t move away after college because I knew we could find something here. Perhaps they were decisions made because of the fear of the unknown, but there’s something to be said for familiarity.

And that’s why change rocks Clevelanders so hard. Sometimes forces out of our control make change to our preferred status quo.  And when that change is negative, we claw and fight to retreat to the familiar.

Maybe that’s why we get stuck in the down and dreary thought process.  We see that return to the familiar as failure instead of accepting it for what it is. We are never going to succeed 100% of the time. Perfection is not possible, but learning from the process is. And isn’t what we learn along the journey more important than the end result?

With this said, let me put forth a challenge to all Clevelanders: What if we all started truly believing that this was the best place on earth?  A daunting challenge for some, I know. But…

  • Instead of complaining about the snow, why not jump in and make a snowman or go sledding?
  • Get excited about your neighborhood and spread the word that local festival coming up this weekend.
  • No more of cranking about what a casino will “do” to our downtown. Why not learn more about all the jobs these new economic opportunities will be creating?

As my fabulous yoga instructor says, “What you believe, you create”.  Let’s stop comparing ourselves to all the other cities and towns. It’s time for us to create our new normal, our own standards of success. We – the citizens of Greater Cleveland – can construct a foundation for a way of life based on what we need to thrive here.  And it doesn’t take a herculean effort to do so.  I can’t say that it will keep the snow away this winter, but it might give you a new outlook when it comes down from that beautiful Northeastern Ohio sky.

Why? New York!

I know, this is “Why CLE?,” but I spent a fabulous weekend in NYC and I just have to tell you about it. It’s not a far flight from CLE, so this makes a great weekend getaway destination.

CLEguy and I decided that, as our birthday gifts to each other, we would go on a little vacation. After much debate, we settled on NYC. CLEguy had never been and I had only been once, so we knew there would be a lot we wanted to do and see. Rather than tell you chronologically, I’ll fill you in on my two favorite parts in turn: the sights and the food.

The Sights

Aside from just gawking at everything as we went by, there were some specific sights we knew we wanted to see. We started at the Empire State Building and went all the way up to the 102nd floor observation deck (there are two observation decks: one on the 102nd floor and one on the 86th floor).

The views were breathtaking, to say the least. Plus, I totally had “Sleepless in Seattle” flashbacks on the 86th floor observation deck.

We also stopped in to the beautiful St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

When we were walking past St. Patrick’s on Saturday, we happened to see firefighters from all over the country lining the street around the cathedral. There was a memorial service at the cathedral to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11. We were able to see the flag procession entering the cathedral and it was incredibly moving. I had not purposely planned our trip around the anniversary of 9/11, but I have to say that being in New York for this particular weekend gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of 9/11′s real, human impact.

Along those lines, CLEguy and I did head over to Ground Zero on Saturday. It is so eerie to see this empty space among all the buildings and to recall what happened there.

On Sunday morning, we hopped on the Statue Cruise line and headed over to the Statue of Liberty. This was a great way to spend a morning: the boat ride provided beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline and we got to visit this incredible landmark. We climbed to the top of the pedestal to get some more wonderful views.

More sights that we saw over the weekend: Grand Central Station, the United Nations, the New York Stock Exchange, the Charging Bull statue, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park, the Plaza Hotel, Times Square, and the Naked Cowboy (seriously, CLEguy has pictures of me with him!). I have so many pictures and there is so much more that we didn’t get to see. NYC is a treasure trove of historic and culturally significant sights and we had a blast packing in as many as we could.

The Food

Of course, NYC is a foodie wonderland. We did some great eating over the weekend (which I’m hoping was counteracted by all the walking to the see the sights). Friday evening, we headed to Greenwich Village for dinner at The Spotted Pig.

While waiting for our table, we got to chatting with some folks in the bar and received recommendations for other great spots in the neighborhood. So, we decided to make it a progressive dinner instead. Our appetizers at Spotted Pig were fantastic.

We shared deviled eggs, devils on horseback, and flake crudo. CLEguy said these were the best deviled eggs he’s ever had and I concur – creamy, slightly spicy, with a great mustard kick. The devils on horseback (dates wrapped in bacon with a spicy glaze) were fantastic. And the flaze crudo was light and fresh. This fun, funky spot is a must-go in NYC.

Moving on to our dinner course, we headed a few blocks over to Corner Bistro. In a city of fancy restaurants, Corner Bistro serves its food on plastic plates for incredibly reasonable prices – and that’s how they like it. The menu has only a handful of items, but all you need is the Bistro Burger: a thick juicy burger with cheese and bacon. We shared the Bistro Burger and the grilled cheese with bacon, along with french fries and draft Yuengling. A pretty perfect meal, if you ask me…

Our Saturday evening went to the fancier side of things with dinner at Buddakan. Located in the Meatpacking District, Buddakan occupies an old Nabisco factory and is a huge, interesting, dramatic space.

The food and the service at Buddakan were phenomenal. We split the crispy calamari salad to start, with a tangy dressing, calamari, and cashews among mixed greens.

I selected the roasted duck noodles for my entree. The duck was seared and served over rice noodles with a delicious broth and duck wontons. CLEguy chose the shrimp and lobster chow fun, which was packed with seafood, egg noodles, veggies, and a spicy sauce. We also split sugar snap peas with mushrooms and water chestnuts. I can’t recommend Buddakan enough for a fabulous dining experience!

After Buddakan, we wandered a few blocks down to the Hotel Gansevoort’s rooftop bar: Plunge. With amazing views, a chic crowd, and insanely expensive martinis, this was a fun way to cap off a truly NYC evening.

Other not-to-be-missed eating experiences: John’s Pizzeria (we had the margherita pizza), Sprinkles Cupcakes (try the vanilla chocolate hazelnut), Dylan’s Candy Bar (the strawberry Nerds mojito is awesome), and Serendipity 3 (I had the sand pie sundae, with homemade pecan sandies, coffee ice cream, and hot fudge).

Much thanks to all who recommended food stops for our trip – we tried to hit a lot and find some of our own. I was also very fortunate to get to brunch with at Fig and Olive with a lovely NYC friend and fellow blogger, Single Gal in the City.

So, next time you’re thinking about a weekend getaway, remember all these sights and eats are just a short plane ride away from CLE. We loved our NYC weekend, but are also glad to be back home in the CLE!
